Getting to know Piki (Pikithins)

Where are you from? and a little bit about you

I’m from New York. I grew up building traps in my parents backyard, hiding under night tables, and drawing Sailor Moon characters in color pencil. Japanese culture made a huge impact on my life when I was young, especially when it came to drawing. It was one of the things that got me into art. Now, I’m more involved in building pieces. Drawing isn’t enough to hold the colorful and imaginative world bursting in my brain.
What items do you carry in your shop?
I work in an array of categories! In my shop is bracelets, dolls, charms, and cards. Sometimes I’ll do commissioned illustrations too.
How did you decide on your shop name?
At first, the name of the shop was going to be called “Thicithins,” in reference to how thin the bracelets are. However, I wanted to add a part of my personality in the name. Therefore, Pikithins was born. The shop name is the combination of the words ‘picky’ and ‘things.’ I tend to be extremely picky in my creative process, but completely open minded as to how different materials come together to create an item.

Do you have a blog, twitter, or facebook page?

Sure do!

What or who inspires you?
My favorite artists, Os Gemeos, are two brothers from Brazil who work in graffiti and paint. I love their usage of color, since that tends to be a large factor in my work. They add a layer of fantasy and quirkiness through their usage of form and line I just can’t get enough of! I want to expose the world I live inside my head through my crafts as Os Gemeos paints worlds vividly on buildings.

What items in your shop do you most enjoy making and why?

My dolls for sure! I love being able to create personalities through stitch work. It is a meditative process for me. It allows my mind to relax and remember why I started my shop in the first place: because crafting is the embodiment of me. With each item I create, I give away a piece of my sanity. I love being insane, it makes me wilder in my ideas.

Anything else you would like us to know?

I love to write =). My dream blog helps me practice my prose and poetry. I can’t live without reading either. I suggest you read Kushiel’s Dart, an AMAZING book!

My Thougths

I have made many of the basic “friendship bracelets” in the past with embroidery floss and the styles of them was supposed to be much like Piki’s bracelets although I never could get mine to look very good. In fact if Piki were to ever see my attempts at making bracelets I would be very embarrassed. 🙂

Piki was kind in making me a red and black bracelet. I was taken by surprise at how tightly woven the floss is. Piki truly has the art of bracelet making down pat. The overall design of the bracelet is beautiful and I love that the bracelet is not big and bulky and I can wear it with my every day style of a t-shirt and jeans. I also love that Piki will customize your bracelet and it can be made in any colors you like. I had mine made in my daughter’s school colors so that I can wear it to her spirit events.

One of my favorite features about these bracelets besides not being big and bulky is that I don’t have to remove it while cleaning house and such. I also love that it is made with “Cobra Closure” style which means that the size is adjustable and easy to slip on and off. I love Piki’s work making these crafty bracelets and I know you will too. With the quality of craftsmanship in the bracelets I know that you can’t go wrong with any item purchased through her!
