Posted on December 3, 2011 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

How to Make Your Own Cleaning Supplies Store bought cleaning supplies generally contain a lot of harmful chemicals and are pretty costly. There are lots of cleaning supplies that you can make at home with simple, non-toxic ingredients. Believe it or not, you probably already have all the ingredients you need right in your pantry.  All Purpose Cleaner An all purpose cleaner can be used almost anywhere in the house. The problem with most cleaners is that they leave behind noxious chemicals on every surface they clean. If these chemicals get on your counter or your baby's high chair tray, they could easily be transferred onto food. If you want to  avoid rinsing things off after using a cleaning spray, create your own mix by combining 1 cup of water with 1 cup of white vinegar. There is nothing harmful that could get left behind, and you can use it just about anywhere.  Glass Cleaner A mix of alcohol, water, and white vinegar makes a very good glass cleaner. Guest Post-DIY Fabric Softener

Posted on March 13, 2011 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

Many of you may or may not know the risks involved in thesimple act of adding a cup of fabric softener in your kids’ load oflaundry.  How can something as fuzzy andadorable as a teddy bear named Snuggle be bad for your kids? Pretty easily, as it turns out.  The main ingredients of most fabric softenersare as follows: ·        Surfactants ·        Fragrance ·        Undenatured ethyl alcohol Surfactants are in everything and can be harmless if madefrom safe sources like vegetables instead of sodium lauryl sulfates.  Fragrances, however, are tricky; companiesaren’t required to release the ingredients of fragrances to protect their tradesecrets.  This means they could be usingbleach for fragrance, if bleach would sell. Meanwhile, ethyl alcohol has been suspected of causing liver damage andbeing an endocrine disruptor.  Thesetoxins don’t just harm you and your kids—they go down the drain and into ourwater system to pollute the earth, too. The biggest and most widely relevant … [Read more...]

Easy, Inexpensive Ways to Prepare Your Home for the Holidays When the air begins to get that holiday feel, but the house looks anything but festive, there is no need to throw up your hands and concede defeat. Even the most frugal moms can make a big difference in the appearance of their homes in a short time period. When guests are arriving in less than a week, rather than panicking, use some of these simple ideas to make your home more appealing and pleasant: HIDE THE PROBLEMS • Take boxes with lids from room to room, clearing surfaces and floors of unnecessary items. Getting the Most Out of Your Dishwasher After a number of years since their invention the dishwasher it has risen to the status of the range and the refrigerator in its place in the kitchens of America with builders even putting a spot by your sink specifically for your dishwasher.   There were of course problems with the beginning models and some problems that persist to this day.  One being that the thing turned out to be very loud and they didn’t clean nearly as well as you would hope and the amounts of electricity used would be a shock to your electric bill.  In fact some people were pre washing the dishes and then letting the dishwasher finish it off.  Basically they were doing half of the work while the dishwasher did the other half.  Not something that was of much help if you ask me.  Of course the long march of technology continues on and now although the dishwashers are very powerful you still have to keep some things in mind to get everything cleaned correctly.  You … [Read more...]
