How to save hundreds of dollars on cleaning supplies

Posted on June 24, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

How to save hundreds of dollars on cleaning supplies Does it seem like you’re constantly dumping money on another gallon of laundry detergent? Does it seem like stain remover, toilet bowl cleaner, glass spray and all those other cleaning supplies are becoming more expensive and run out way too soon after you buy them? Ever wonder if there’s anything you can do to stop feeling like your (literally) pouring money down the drain? With some simple changes and a little bit of effort, you can! Use cleaners sparingly. You may like the fresh scent of pledge that lingers around your house after your dust but you can still get clean looking surfaces and leave the house smelling great if you use half of the amount you normally do. Try using the same practice on glass cleaners and other sprays and laundry detergent as well. Start with cutting the amount you use in half. If you feel like you need more, build back up to what is perfect for you. Water it down! There are many different things … [Read more...]

DIY Wedding Decorations

Posted on June 24, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

DIY Wedding Decorations If you’re anything like, well, most brides-to-be, you probably fall in one of two camps. Either you’ve been planning the wedding nonstop since moments after the engagement, or you’re dragging your feet about all of it. Either way, even just thinking about your wedding can bring on a stress migraine. Relax! You’ll have it all ready in time for the big day. You will. Some things will be perfect and come off without a hitch and other things won’t go quite as you planned. Worry not; they too will be perfect later on because they’ll make great stories. As you also probably know, wedding decorations can be expensive especially if rented through the venue, as in order to make a higher margin, the prices can be well above the actual costs. For the time being, here’s an idea for you. See if you can’t get a group of your friends together and work on some DIY wedding decorations. Not only will you be making headway on the wedding planning, but crafting is also a great … [Read more...]

Ten Carpet Facts Every Homeowner Should Know

Posted on June 23, 2012 / By: Krista 1 Comment

Ten Carpet Facts Every Homeowner Should Know  There are a lot of flooring choices available, but none are quite so inviting and comfortable as carpet. If you care for it properly, your carpet can provide you with years of use and good looks— use these ten tips to give it the care and attention it deserves. Occasionally rearrange your furniture. It may seem inconvenient to do so, but it will keep people from walking the same path over and over again, which causes traffic wear on the carpet fibres. Take care of your other flooring. You may not have carpet in every room, and those floors need care as well. Use a broom for sweeping, and put throw rugs at all entrances so people have something on which to wipe their feet before entering your home.  Remove your shoes before coming in, and ask others to do the same. If you make this a habit, you'll be bringing far less dirt into your home and onto your carpet. Keep walkways outside your home clean. You might not think that sweeping … [Read more...]

Cheap & Easy DIY Tomato Cage

Posted on June 22, 2012 / By: Krista 2 Comments

Cheap & Easy DIY Tomato Cage My wife was born with dark green thumbs. I mean, they themselves bloom every spring (yes her thumbs! Ok, not really.) Her parents have a stunning garden and raised their daughter on the basics of weeding, seeding, and feeding. That said, I shouldn’t have been surprised when the tomatoes she planted in one of our garden boxes outgrew their new home in a matter of days. They grew so fast that within a week most of the branches were spread out on the newly laid sod around the garden box. I knew a fight between my lawn mower and her tomatos wouldn’t exactly go over well, so we scrambled to put together an emergency tomato cage. The result was so cheap and easy, I wanted to share it, so here it is: Materials needed: 1 - 2’x5’ Ladder Trellis (mine was about $10 at Lowes) Saw Twine or String (300+ feet shouldn’t be more than $4) Step 1 Cut the ladder trellis in half creating two 2’x2.5’ sections. You can eyeball this cut as you’ll be burying … [Read more...]

3 Tasty Chicken Breast Recipes If you want to feed your family healthy meals, you probably rely a lot on boneless, skinless chicken breast. It can get a bit monotonous however. To liven things up, I often try out new recipes I find around the internet. Lately, Pinterest has been a huge resource for me. Well, without further ado, here are three recipes that I’ve tried that are new family favorites. Crispy Southwest Chicken Wraps – These wraps are tasty and good for you. Not only that, but they sure stretch the budget and take only a few minutes to prepare. For added speed, have some chicken already cooked that you can just shred up. My family loves Mexican style food, so this bean, rice and chicken meal is a hit.    Parmesan and Panko Encrusted Chicken – Wow, wow, wow. Crispy and delicious, these lightly fried in olive oil treats are so tasty. What kid doesn’t like bread crumbs and cheese, right? Fancy enough to serve at a party, easy enough to make in a hurry. Six home money saving tips http://jalonburton.blogspot.ca/2012/01/organize-your-grocery-list.html“Times is hard, times is tough,” Grammy-winning Loudon Wainwright III wrote in 2009. And in tough times like these, many homeowners are looking for ways to save money. Here are six home money saving techniques that will help keep your checkbook out of the red. 1. Install a programmable thermostat Heating and cooling can be a major expense for homeowners, but equipping your house with a programmable thermostat is a great way to cut costs. These devices can be set to turn off the heat or air when you aren’t home. By turning your heating and cooling system off for several hours a day, you can save between 10 and 20 percent on your bill. Programmable thermostats are sold at most home improvement stores, and range between $50 and $200. 2. Eat smart and stick to the list It seems like a simple tip, but grocery stores are designed to lure you into spending more. Always make a list of what … [Read more...]

DIY Floor Sanding

Posted on June 18, 2012 / By: Krista 1 Comment

DIY Floor Sanding If your wood floors have been covered by carpeting and you want to restore those floors the first step is to remove that old carpet. The next step is to start at one corner of the room and using pliers grab the edge of the carpet and begin pulling in an upwards direction. Pull up small portions of the carpet at a time and cut the carpet into lengthwise strips. After you have enough strips you can begin to roll them into a bale and tie the bale using twine or even duct tape. After you roll and tie each bail roll it out of the room. There will be parts of the floor that will have small nails sticking up. Usually the areas are all around the edge of the room so obviously the next step is to remove the nails either with pliers or a pry bar. Now you can begin sanding the floor. Remember that you will be spending a great deal of time and effort to restore the floor so be sure to use professional sanding equipment. If you have a small area to sand say less than 3 or 4 … [Read more...]

Black & Decker Power Tools Can Make Life Easier for the Do-It-Yourself Homeowner

Posted on June 14, 2012 / By: Krista 1 Comment

Black & Decker Power Tools Can Make Life Easier for the Do-It-Yourself Homeowner Black & Decker power tools can make life much easier when performing many of your do-it-yourself projects around the house. Having the right tools can mean the difference of having the ability to complete the project yourself, or creating a need to hire a professional service. As expensive as it has to hire a professional, you can buy a large quantity of professional power tools, and still save money, simply doing the project yourself. Letting the Tool Do the Work Even if you are not good with your hands, the right tools can often help you master many jobs, and get it done quicker and better. A quality circular saw can accurately cut lumber more efficiently and accurately than a hand saw. Cordless drills can easily be adjusted to lower the torque and driving speed to use it as a powerful screwdriver, or to quickly drive lags bolts deep into dense lumber. The effectiveness of a power tool … [Read more...]

The Multi-Use Product: Olive Oil

Posted on June 13, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

The Multi-Use Product: Olive Oil   Olive oil is a staple found in any kitchen for cooking purposes. However, many people don’t know the large range of uses for this “miracle” product for cleaning supplies or for daily use. Here’s five ways to use olive oil outside of the kitchen: Leather Maintenance: While this solution is highly debated, I still like to use a tad of olive oil as a quick fix for worn leather. Use a circular motion to rub a little bit of oil into the necessary spot and leave the olive oil to work on the leather for roughly thirty minutes. After simply wipe away with a cloth. Clean Pans: Olive oil mixtures can also work wonders in the kitchen, but no only for cooking. It can be used to clean or shine a variety of cooking pans such as stainless steel and cast-iron. Steel pans get their shine back relatively easily through a little elbow grease and buffing with olive oil. Cast-iron pans take a little more work, with a paste of olive oil, … [Read more...]
