The Flavors of Fourth of July

Posted on July 4, 2012 / By: Krista 1 Comment

Celebrating our country’s independence, the Fourth of July traditionally honors American pride. From fireworks to feasts, this upbeat day highlights American pastimes across the country. In Maryland, locals serve up crab cakes  fresh from the Eastern shore, while Pacific Northwesterners  grill salmon and peas, a meal native to the area. In the Midwest, you’ll find Wisconsin Cheeseheads broiling trout and Indiana Hoosiers  grilling steak and sweet corn. From local meats to patriotic desserts, the Fourth is a time to honor local American cultures, but with growing appreciation for our melting pot make-up, many Fourth of July feasts are seeing some international flavors. I know what you’re thinking — crab meat and salmon are expensive! And that is generally true, but after all, the Fourth of July only comes once a year. There are plenty of delicacies to dive into but you don’t have to go broke doing it. If you’re cooking on a budget, check-out online coupon sites like Valpak and look … [Read more...]

Afraid To Let Your Child Brush Their Teeth Alone? Here’s How I Overcame My Fears

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista 2 Comments

Guest post contributed by Claire York for The Invisible Orthodontist. When my son was a toddler he used to yearn to brush his teeth alone. However, I was just not comfortable with this. Now I am proud to walk by in the mornings and see him standing on his step stool brushing his teeth at the sink. Learning to trust him was tough, but now I am glad to see him taking his first steps toward independence. It’s not as though my fears were completely unfounded – I had read about the dangers of fluoride poisoning if children swallow large amounts of toothpaste, and my son had already proved himself to be very fond of anything with a sweet flavor. I simply didn’t trust him to be left alone with a tube full of toothpaste. I also worried that my son wouldn’t brush properly if I didn’t help him. I worried that he would either hurt his gums by brushing too hard or leave plaque on his teeth by not brushing thoroughly enough. Even though I knew his baby teeth would be replaced as … [Read more...]

8 Best 4th of July Movies and TV Show Episodes

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

The 4th of July is a day when barbeque, fireworks, and entertainment collide. The media landscape is laden with Independence Day celebrations, and if you’re intent on vegging out during the holiday, here are four television episodes and four films that are sure to bring out your patriotic side. 1. Born Again on the Fourth of July (King of the Hill, 2009): Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon) is a boy on a mission to find himself and where he stands in the world. The episode “Born Again on the Fourth of July” is no exception. After attending an evangelical church, Bobby becomes an extreme Born Again Christian and destroys his father‘s huge Uncle Sam decoration, thinking it’s a graven image. However, Hank thinks the people who live on neighboring Milton Street are the vandals and declares war. This is a great episode for celebrating Independence Day not only because the neighborhood war acts as a mini-Revolutionary War, but because Bobby’s innocent search for personal truth is as … [Read more...]

How to Survive a Rainy Day Fourth of July

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista 3 Comments

The Fourth of July is one of the top Holiday's at our house. It's like Christmas, but with legal explosives. It's a time when we get together with family and friends for fun, excitement and swimming immediately after eating. Unfortunately last year, our blissful outing of watching the local parade, the annual gluttonous BBQ and Samoan food picnic was ruined by fierce rain. We only got to see fireworks because the local fire department was determined to do it no matter what (you guys rock!). Last year's washout got me thinking about having a backup plan this year. After all, we can't control the weather, so what can you do if a rainy day swallows up your Fourth of July plans? 6 Kids Activities for a Rainy Fourth of July Indoor Drive-In If you can get your hands on a projector, why not set up a special movie event in the family room? Tack a white bed sheet to the wall and create an indoor drive-in theatre. Pop some popcorn, grab a few special treats the kids love … [Read more...]

Pool Safety and Children

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista 2 Comments

Summer is here, and that means lots of time in the swimming pool for kids and their parents. Swimming is one of those low-cost summer activities that define summer vacation. Before jumping in, though, make swimming pool safety a priority. Hundreds of people die in pool-related accidents each year. Many of those who drown are children. Consider these sobering statistics from the CDC: From 2005-2009, there were an average of 3,533 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day On average, two of the 10 people who die from unintentional drowning each day are children aged 14 or younger. More than 30% of children ages 1-4 who died from an unintentional injury died as a result of drowning. Most drownings of children aged 1-4 years old occur in home swimming pools. While there is no substitute for adult supervision and responsible play, there are steps pool owners can take to make their swimming pools safer for … [Read more...]

The Many Benefits Of Studying In The Open

Posted on July 2, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

The Many Benefits Of Studying In The Open   When you think of children spending time outdoors, you tend to picture them kicking a ball around with their friends or playing innocently in a tree house. The idea of them studying outside may be an alien concept to many people, but stick with me here… In 2005, American journalist and author Richard Louv wrote about a condition he referred to as “nature deficit disorder”. Now before you start worrying that you have no idea what this is – don’t panic as you’re not alone. However, if your children are spending too much time indoors then they might begin to suffer from feelings of alienation and apathy – two key symptoms of nature deficit disorder. Potential backlashes of the condition include a lack of progress on the academic side of things, and a number of behavioural problems too. Since Louv’s coining of the term many other authoritative bodies, including the National Trust, have conducted studies which have all produced the … [Read more...]

Posted on June 29, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

Save Money When You Move There are a number of different reasons for moving to a new home, from college graduates leaving home for their first apartment to newlyweds needing a new place for a growing family. Despite what you may have heard, moving doesn’t have to be stressful or overly expensive. As odds are high you’ll relocate at some point in your life, here are some suggestions to ease your load. Take stock of your belongings Before you begin to search for movers, you'll want to take stock of all the items going to the new place. Take only what you need so you won’t have to pay for a larger truck or a storage facility. Sell what you don't need at a yard sale, give things away to friends, donate via Freecycle or drop things off at your local Goodwill. Once you know which items you’re taking, you’ll have a good idea of the number of boxes, containers and pieces of furniture that will be packed on the moving truck. This information is essential for the moving company you … [Read more...]

Three Steps to Organizing Your Desk

Posted on June 27, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

Three Steps to Organizing Your Desk   An organized desk makes your working life much easier. You will be able to put your hands on exactly what you need, when you need it instead of spending hours searching under paperwork and behind mugs. It does not take hours to organize your desk and you can do it gradually over time if you need to. Remove Everything From Your Desk Take away everything that you can from your desk. It is unlikely that you will be able to put the computer on the floor but remove items like your pen holder, paperwork and folders. This will help you start with a clean desk and only put the items back on that you actually need. Go through the drawers to the desk, too, and remove everything from them. Place everything that you have on the floor with everything from the top of the desk. This will help to avoid forgetting about important paperwork but keeping hold of things that you don’t need. Prioritize Your Items Now go through all the items on the … [Read more...]
