Ways to Make Your Home More Cozy for Winter

Ways to Make Your Home More Cozy for Winter

Now that September is here, it is time to get your home ready for the colder months ahead. There’s already a faint chill in the air, and this is only going to get more pronounced as the daylight hours fade away before Christmas time; that’s why now is the perfect time to do those jobs that come around each year. I’ve delegated bits and pieces to various family members, so we all have responsibilities and chores to do in the next couple of weeks. It can be a struggle to accept that the summer is finally on its way out, but by being organised you can be a little smug about how cosy your home is when your friends exclaim how cold it was when they got out of bed on that first proper autumnal day! Here are my tips for what to do next…

Fix any window and door leaks

A job for the DIY fanatic in your family; fixing the leaks in the window frames and doors can be essential for keeping the heat in and the cold out. When you think about it in terms of money flying out of the door, it becomes a lot more appealing to get the task done once and for all. There are all kinds of sealants on sale in the big DIY stores, so spend one day this weekend having a look around to see what is best suited for your needs.

Swap over your bedding

Most of us have a few duvets in the home, and it is almost time to swap your summer one for a winter one. I just bought a new goose feather duvet for our super king sized bed as ours was a few years old so I’m really exciting about using it for the first time soon. We also have goose down duvets in the guest bedroom, and our kids like these on especially cold nights too. In the meantime you could just have a couple of blankets handy in case you need to put them on top of your summer sheets.

Set the thermostat

We had a new boiler installed this year so I’m still trying to figure out all of the different settings on our thermostat. That’s why I have tasked myself with reading the instruction booklet this weekend so I finally know what’s what. After this, I’ll be setting the thermostat to turn the heating on for certain hours in the day when we are home; usually this is first thing in the morning and the evening when we all eat dinner together. If you prefer the use of a fireplace to central heating, get someone out to check that everything is safe to use for the coming winter.

Find your slippers and winter gear

We store quite a lot of bits in the attic so it’s my husband’s job to go up there a couple of times each year to fetch the bits we need. He’ll be getting our thick coats, dressing gowns and slippers down shortly so these are on hand when we need them.

I’ve already had to put a thicker comforter on my bed because I’ve been so chilly at night!

I love winter! But talking about setting the thermostat gives me stress through the roof because our power bill usually goes up 25 to 50% in the winter months. But most everything else about winter I love. I love the cold weather, the holidays, & the once in a while snow we get. But my favorite part of winter is the clothes! Getting to wear sweaters and boots is right up my alley.

It’s already starting to get cold here at night, so I’m slowly trying to get ready for the Winter months. Good tips!
