Afraid To Let Your Child Brush Their Teeth Alone? Here’s How I Overcame My Fears

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista 2 Comments

Guest post contributed by Claire York for The Invisible Orthodontist. When my son was a toddler he used to yearn to brush his teeth alone. However, I was just not comfortable with this. Now I am proud to walk by in the mornings and see him standing on his step stool brushing his teeth at the sink. Learning to trust him was tough, but now I am glad to see him taking his first steps toward independence. It’s not as though my fears were completely unfounded – I had read about the dangers of fluoride poisoning if children swallow large amounts of toothpaste, and my son had already proved himself to be very fond of anything with a sweet flavor. I simply didn’t trust him to be left alone with a tube full of toothpaste. I also worried that my son wouldn’t brush properly if I didn’t help him. I worried that he would either hurt his gums by brushing too hard or leave plaque on his teeth by not brushing thoroughly enough. Even though I knew his baby teeth would be replaced as … [Read more...]

8 Best 4th of July Movies and TV Show Episodes

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista Leave a Comment

The 4th of July is a day when barbeque, fireworks, and entertainment collide. The media landscape is laden with Independence Day celebrations, and if you’re intent on vegging out during the holiday, here are four television episodes and four films that are sure to bring out your patriotic side. 1. Born Again on the Fourth of July (King of the Hill, 2009): Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon) is a boy on a mission to find himself and where he stands in the world. The episode “Born Again on the Fourth of July” is no exception. After attending an evangelical church, Bobby becomes an extreme Born Again Christian and destroys his father‘s huge Uncle Sam decoration, thinking it’s a graven image. However, Hank thinks the people who live on neighboring Milton Street are the vandals and declares war. This is a great episode for celebrating Independence Day not only because the neighborhood war acts as a mini-Revolutionary War, but because Bobby’s innocent search for personal truth is as … [Read more...]

How to Survive a Rainy Day Fourth of July

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista 3 Comments

The Fourth of July is one of the top Holiday's at our house. It's like Christmas, but with legal explosives. It's a time when we get together with family and friends for fun, excitement and swimming immediately after eating. Unfortunately last year, our blissful outing of watching the local parade, the annual gluttonous BBQ and Samoan food picnic was ruined by fierce rain. We only got to see fireworks because the local fire department was determined to do it no matter what (you guys rock!). Last year's washout got me thinking about having a backup plan this year. After all, we can't control the weather, so what can you do if a rainy day swallows up your Fourth of July plans? 6 Kids Activities for a Rainy Fourth of July Indoor Drive-In If you can get your hands on a projector, why not set up a special movie event in the family room? Tack a white bed sheet to the wall and create an indoor drive-in theatre. Pop some popcorn, grab a few special treats the kids love … [Read more...]

BURBANK, Calif. Pool Safety and Children

Posted on July 3, 2012 / By: Krista 2 Comments

Summer is here, and that means lots of time in the swimming pool for kids and their parents. Swimming is one of those low-cost summer activities that define summer vacation. Before jumping in, though, make swimming pool safety a priority. Hundreds of people die in pool-related accidents each year. Many of those who drown are children. Consider these sobering statistics from the CDC: From 2005-2009, there were an average of 3,533 fatal unintentional drownings (non-boating related) annually in the United States — about ten deaths per day On average, two of the 10 people who die from unintentional drowning each day are children aged 14 or younger. More than 30% of children ages 1-4 who died from an unintentional injury died as a result of drowning. Most drownings of children aged 1-4 years old occur in home swimming pools. While there is no substitute for adult supervision and responsible play, there are steps pool owners can take to make their swimming pools safer for … [Read more...]
