Around the first of the year the diets start. Detoxing raises its head as a way to defeat over laden dinners and gnoshing on starches like potatoes, breads, and rice. The Holidays aren’t the only time we see Detox diets start trending again. Swimsuit season, weddings, graduations, and special events push people resorting to an extreme diet to help peel off pounds. Do they work?
The main thing to look at is the diet itself, before getting into the detox side of it.
A diet is a plan of action; it is not a code for starvation. A diet is to nourish your body and give your muscles the ability and energy to do physical work and carry on life processes. Your brain needs food to function correctly and respond to signals from your body. From housework to taking care of the children, your brain needs nourishment to make decisions.
A diet is a journal of your lifestyle, your likes, and it manifests from a lifetime of habits. So to jump on and off diets is not a solution for a long term effect. It’s a solution for failing.
The detox diet
Some people have proclaimed this the compensation diet, as it is a means to balance the high caloric intake of the night before by taking in very little food the next few days. Since your body stores fat within 3-5 hours, it’s foolish to think it will be burned off by denying yourself the next day. Your body won’t burn fat, but the quickest sugar source- glucose.
The real deal
The detox diet seems like your body is being punished for overeating. It’s a crime against your body for misunderstanding; the body has nondiscrimination against where its gets it fuel. It’s very hard on your body to expose it to extreme diets. It takes its toll on the physical and mental aspects of your health. This is why you get harsh cravings and it’s almost impossible to stick to an extreme diet. When you do your body responds as if went through a trauma with hair loss and nervous issues.
The detox diet can take its toll also. Suddenly jumping from eating to having nothing but tidbits and what your body sees as scraps; your body goes into survival mode and slows your metabolism sabotaging the purpose.
Detox Diets can work for you if
1. Don’t stress over it
If you over indulged, just move on and resume your regular schedule and meals. Don’t over compensate as it can affect your blood sugar levels further slowing weight loss.
2. Don’t over- over indulge
Once in a while you can fix over indulging, but to make a habit of it sets your body up for failure.
3. Don’t go into it blindly
If you know an opportunity for over indulging is coming up, eat lightly before to ready your body. Drink a glass of water before a meal to fill your stomach.
4. Don’t starve yourself
It affects how your body converts glucose to glucagon for storage, and you end up making your body slow the burning metabolisms. This in effect, makes you can more weight as when you go back to eating normally that storage mechanism is activated and you store energy (fat) more readily than you did before the Detox diet.
Detox diets ultimately give you weight gain. Don’t punish your body by extreme measures; just try to eat in moderation. If you slip up, then get back on the wagon- not the roller coaster!
