Getting to know Maggie (MaggieOverby)
As a native of New Orleans, LA and a graduate of New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and LSU school of Architecture I claim Louisiana and all its uniqueness as my home. I lived in New Orleans for 18 years and Baton Rouge for 7 but as an Army wife the last 10 years have involved a lot of moving. I still get back to New Orleans every chance I get, sometimes even for a year at a time if my husband deploys overseas. I am still proud to call it home!
I started my career in Architecture but as my first child was born and the first move was on the horizon I knew I needed a change. I had to get creative (a little pun intended.) I wanted to stay at home with my kids but have a little extra money coming in. I started off sewing for the new house(s) and then for other people’s houses, before you know it I’m making pillows, drapes, bedding, slipcovers, whatever is needed.
This year I met up with an entrepreneurial mom who allowed me a steady income working from home sewing her hand bag line. She started her business from home and still runs it out of her home making a very good income. I CAN DO THAT! At least I think I can, so here I am on Etsy giving it a try. The flowers started as decoration for the purses I was making and now they are taking on a life of their own embellishing head bands, pillows and who knows what else.
My favorite item I have listed right now is actually one I just listed. I call it the Marie Antoinette Pillow, it has a appliqued ladies silhouette with 3D flowers in her hair. I just love it! When you get an idea sometime it turns out nice enough and sometimes you just know you hit the mark. I think this one came out better than I imagined it.
What do I do for fun… Well my house has always been my hobby and since I move so often I always have a new palette. I guess that is really why I started sewing so I could make things for my house and decorate. I also took up scrap booking a few years ago at the insistence of a friend and have really grown to love it, especially when we get a chance to take a break and scrap together. In general I would say fun for me is anything creative, I might see some project on TV on in a magazine that looks cool so I try it. Usually it works out, sometimes it doesn’t but either way I usually learn something. Mostly fun is feeling I get when I have made something with my own hands that I can really be proud of.
When did you start designing?
My 2th grade teacher told my mom she needed to put me in art classes because I spent too much time drawing in class. So since the age of 7 I have been in training for this day. In 9th grade I auditioned and was accepted to New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. The best way to describe NOCCA is Fame the movie, it is a high school for the Visual and Performing Arts and an amazing place. From 10th to 12th grade I spent ½ days at my regular high school and the other ½ doing printmaking , photography, ceramics, painting, drawing and sometimes sewing. This experience really shaped who I am today and how I think. To be totally immersed in the arts at such a young age is a rare privilege.
2. What draws you to sew?
I don’t like to make the same thing twice so sewing pillows allows me to make each one its own work of art. My favorite part of the design is the fabrics. I love fabric. I could spend hours in a fabric store looking at the colors, patterns, trims, and buttons. I get the most pleasure out of choosing the colors and textures to put together. The pillows and hair flowers I make are each their own little color palette and each a delight to see come to life.
3. Currently what is your all time favorite piece that you ever created?
Ever created? That goes a long way back. That being said I will stick to more recent history. When I opened my Esty store I started making what I call my Marie Antoinette Pillow. It is a silhouette of a lady with flowers in her hair. I think she is beautiful and she looks great in any color….

4. Did you have a mentor?
I can’t say I have one specific person who is my mentor. The people I meet everyday are the ones that inspire me. Teachers that really seem to love what they do and share it with enthusiasm, my boss who has manage by luck and hard work to build a thriving creative business while still being home to raise her children, my husband who is always ready to take the risk and pushes me to do so, and my mom who is forever saying “Maggie, you could make that.”
5. If you could describe yourself in one sentence what would it be?
I love solving problems by being creative.
My Thoughts
Maggie was very kind and allowed me to review a new 4th of July flower! I find her flowers very unique because I have never seen a flower made out of fabric before. They are original and creative! I also love that Maggie’s flowers can be worn with or without a headband! The hair flowers also come in a large variety of color combinations and can be worn with any outfit. Also if you have a custom creation in mind Maggie would be happy to help you with that as well. Maggie’s flowers are not overly big and they lie pretty flat against your head to allow that little spunk of color and not worry about a big bulky flower on the side of your head!
As you know I put each product I review through a series of tests. I pulled on Maggie’s flower and it held very securely. The button in the middle was attached firmly as well and I have no worries about it falling apart as my 5 year old or I wear it day to day! Maggie also has thoughtfully placed a piece of felt on one side of the hair clip that in turn allows it to lie nicely in your hair and there are no worries about messing up your hair if you need to remove the flower to re-place it! Sometimes when I get my perfect hairstyle down I don’t like where the flower lies in my hair and I have to take it out only to have to re-do all of my hair again. This was never the case with Maggie’s flower!!!
Hair flowers are not the only items that Maggie creates! She also has a assortment of throw pillows, bags, and kids stuff! My favorite being the Soldier/Daddy Doll! If you have or know of someone in the military you have to check these out!!!
