Where are you from? and a little bit about you
I’m a recent graduate of Minnesota State University Moorhead with undergraduate degrees in art and creative writing. I’ve moved around a bit in my life but I’ve always stayed in North Dakota or its southern neighbor, South Dakota. However, in just a few months I’ll be off to San Jose, CA!!! I’m a pen and ink illustrator who loves the Old World style and fairy tales. I’m also a freelance writer for national magazines and am currently illustrating my first commissioned novel.
What items do you carry in your shop?
My shop is full of high-quality prints of my pen and ink illustrations. I also offer canvas bookmarks, note cards, and upcycled lockets made with the help of the wonderful artist Polarity (http://www.polarity.etsy.com/).
Do you have a blog, twitter, or facebook page?
I have all of them. I’m not a big fan of twitter but I blog nearly every day with in-progress shots of my work, business tips, and some insights into the life of an artist whose style died two hundred year ago. You can read my blog at http://studiomme.blogspot.com/. I am a big fan (no pun intended) of Facebook and you can follow my page at http://www.facebook.com/studiomme.
What is your inspiration when making a new item?
I get a lot of ideas while taking my daily walks. My boyfriend is also a huge influence on my work. He’s always saying crazy things like, “You could be a reindeer herder,” and next thing you know, I’m drawing it.
When did you first notice you were a talented artist?
Haha. I think my parents noticed before I did and put me into every art class they could find when I was six. And I’ve never stopped!
Do you have anything new you plan on adding to your store?
My most recent project, tentatively titled “My House,” was inspired by my upcoming move to San Jose, where my boyfriend will be earning his MFA in Photography. Each illustration shows another room full of things a normal person would not collect. The first is “The Goose Room”.
Anything else you would like us to know?
It’s never been a big deal to me, but my art professors were always amazed to learn that I was blind in one eye. I was born with a defect that, despite multiple surgeries, 2 detached retinas, and a cataract, resulted in near blindness in my left eye. As a result, I have really bad depth perception. And while my family enjoys watching me walk into door frames and shoot air balls in basketball, my teachers were surprised that I could draw depth as well as I can. Although, they still believe I can’t see color properly, which is probably why I like black and white so much.
