Moroni’s Guide to Surviving Turbulent Times by John Bytheway

Recently I was sent a copy of John Bytheway’s book Moroni’s Guide to Surviving Turbulent Times. To be honest I did not know how needed this book would be when I let Deseret Book know my interest in reviewing this title. The week that it arrived it seemed like everything in life hit me all at once. All of a sudden I was dealing with depression that I did not know existed in my oldest daughter, my toddler was potty training and getting her attitude, I was dealing with a lot of things with Primary President including my 13th member of my presidency since I was called almost 5 years ago, Stress from my husbands job and things going on there, stress with finances, stress with my blog, stress with home schooling, stress with a new baby on the way…plus my own emotional roller coaster that comes with being pregnant. I just felt myself at a crossroads in so many different ways and felt like my life was swallowing me whole. I went from this life that was in perfect (ok not really) order to a life of complete ciaos. Everything was changing, EVERYTHING. Well it seemed that way at the time anyway. I just could not keep up with anything.

I know that we have all had moments when we have felt that way. Moments when everything is spinning out of control around us and we feel like there is nothing we can do. Moments when it is time to sink or swim. Thank goodness I got this book. Honestly it was also the first time I had ever read a John Bytheway book. Ok. I know that sounds crazy! How can you be an active LDS woman and never have read anything he has written..I know…I know..but it’s true. This was my first John Bytheway experience and I loved it! Plus the book is about Moroni which is exactly where my oldest and I were at during our morning scripture study together. It just fit so perfectly with our daily reading!

Ok. So what are my thoughts exactly? I started reading this book as I sat in the waiting room of a doctors office. I was frustrated that I didn’t have anything to highlight with until I discovered a crayon in the bottom of my purse. Thank goodness for toddlers! The whole hour that I was there I felt like I was being spoken to. I mean REALLY spoken to. I could not put the blue crayon down. The book talks about the life of Moroni and goes chapter by chapter into the words Moroni wrote. It gave me a depth into the person he was and into what he really wanted me to hear. I loved how the book was written for the turbulent times of living in today’s world but I could relate it to myself in so many ways as well.

I needed to humble myself during these turbulent times in my life. I needed to relearn how to let go and let God. I was not alone in my pain, grief, stress etc… There might not have been a whole lot I could do to change some things but I was NOT ALONE!!! I remembered to rely more on the power of the priesthood in my life. To rely more upon my Heavenly Father and see my stress as a blessing. Things were going to work out (and they did). Things were going to be ok!

So to sum it up I just want you all to remember that Heavenly Father is there for you. I know that this book was sent to me because I needed it. I know that there are moments that happen around us every day that are meant to happen so they can influence and shape us into the people that Heavenly Father needs us to be. Things are better in my life now. I have made some big discoveries about myself and big life changes are in the works and it’s ok. I’m not as stressed about it anymore. I know that I am being loved and looked after. So if you are going through a tough time right now or if your on the lookout for something good to read then why not check it out?
