Weighting the Cost and Benefits of Genetic Testing

It was not that long ago that the purpose of one of life’s most interesting molecules was discovered. Deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA as it is more commonly known, is a code that contains all the information needed to create a living organism. Human DNA can tell the story of ancestors long past and even give clues as to how Homo sapiens are changing as a species.

Using the most modern scientific methods, anyone can learn more about themselves by undergoing DNA testing. Some people would love to see what such a test would say about their genetic makeup but sometimes worry about privacy concerns – learn more at Genetic Testing Laboratories. Many people state that the genetic testing cost is worth it because of all the information that can be learned about oneself and ones ancestry.

Studying Specific Health Markers

The amount of information sorted in DNA is enormous. However, scientists discovered that most everyone’s DNA information is practically identical. These similarities are what allow people to have the same general features such as ten fingers, two eyes, and a full complement of organs. By looking at the small percentage of DNA that is unique, researchers have been able to accurately predicting genetic dispositions related to certain illnesses and diseases. A thorough DNA test can detect possibility of developing:

  • Diabetes
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Breast cancer
  • Alzheimer’s
  • Lupus
  • And many more

Saving Money in the Long Run

Since a DNA profile can predict life threatening and life altering conditions, the genetic testing cost is often viewed as a necessary expense. Many of the diseases that DNA tests reveal are expensive to treat which means that any foreknowledge of their existence can help an individual take measures to prepare or even prevent the condition’s further development.

Personalized Health Care

Even if a DNA test provides a negative result for some conditions, an individual can still use the information found in the test to improve his or her quality of life. Every human body is different which often means that a one-size-fits-all health care program will not be ideal for all patients. Armed with personal DNA knowledge, a patient and his or her attending physician can create a customized care program together that will guarantee the best health results. For example, a propensity toward obesity or an inability to metabolize starches or sugars discovered after DNA testing can lead to improved nutrition.

Choosing the Right DNA Test

There are several genetic testing options out there, but they are not all the same. Some tests only look for a few health markers and others are performed by unaccredited or unqualified testing facilities. While a high quality DNA predisposition test will likely cost a few hundred dollars, it is not necessary to spend thousands for a test that will ultimately provide the same information as its less expensive counterpart. When you choose to take the next step in improving your health, make sure to pick a testing lab that is discrete, provides fast results, and is upfront with what kind of information is available through the test.

Interested parties should not wait any longer to satisfy their curiosity about the mysteries stored in their DNA. Ordering and undergoing a test is simple and can provide important information that can improve a person’s quality of life.

  1. Oh wow, I had no clue you could do that.
We already know what we are at risk of from looking at our ancestors and what they suffered with. I know I have lung cancer on both sides of the family as well as diabetes for instance.
